15 Thunder Earns Bid To Nationals!

Perfection... That is one word that can be used to describe the 15 Thunder's play on Sunday, April 6th as they swept through undefeated at the U15 PRIME TIME tournament at Bellevue Community College.  15 Thunder did not drop a single set throughout the day, and put an exclamation point on their day with a 25-16, 25-15 victory over WVBA 15 Black in the Final.

The format called for double elimination play as the region's top 8 U15 teams assembled for the right to go to Dallas with the Region's National Division bid.  They entered the day as the #4 seed (based on Power League play) and started with a convincing win over #5 Lake Tapps 15's (25-14, 25-14), then immediately had to play the #1 seed WVBA.  After some initial nerves, they emerged with a 28-26, 25-20 win over WVBA, earning themselves a two-round break and a match-up with #3 Capitol Ice in the winner's Final.  A close first set (25-21) led to 15 Thunder  putting it in overdrive and cruising to a second set win (25-16) and a date with destiny.  As the consolation bracket sorted itself out  -- WVBA defeated #2 Puget Sound and Capitol Ice for a second shot at 15 Thunder -- the 15 Thunder team stayed relaxed and kept their spirits up.  WVBA was on a roll, and Thunder was ready.

The final was a work of art.  Both sets went virtually the same way -- both teams traded big blocks, big digs, and big swings as the first half of the set was neck and neck until around 12 points -- then 15 Thunder got into a rhythm and put the set away.  The highlight of the stretch run in set number 2 was Sarah Hanna pounding a ball at the 6 foot line down the line, around the WVBA blocker.  That swing punctuated a long run for 15 Thunder and took the wind out of the WVBA team's sails.  There were many heroes on the Thunder team --and everyone did something to contribute to the team's winning a bid.  It was truly an exciting day of volleyball.  We are all proud of you 15 Thunder!

USAV HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM PLUCKS TWO MORE FROM NWJRS

Jordan Bush

17 Thunder

Two more Northwest Juniors VBC club members have been tabbed to participate in the National High Performance Program.  Jordan Bush (17 Thunder, Graham-Kapowsin HS, 2010) has been invited to join the  2008 Girls Development A1 Youth HP Camp to be held this summer in San Francisco, CA (as a libero); and Sarah Hanna (15 Thunder, Issaquah HS, 2011) has been invited to be part of the U.S. Girls’ Youth National A2 Training Team in Tucson, AZ this July 17-27 (as an Outside Hitter).

Tryouts and selection to these prestigious programs is done separately -- at Junior National Qualifiers -- by the National HP staff.  Athletes are chosen to participate after rigorous testing and drill-work at these Qualifiers.  It is truly an honor to be selected and placed into the "pipeline" directly through this process.  We are proud of these athletes and excited to have them representing NW Juniors VBC in these National programs.  We wish them the best of luck and offer them our utmost support this summer.

Northwest Juniors Teams Excel at Regional Championships:

With some of the results still not posted to the regional website (and not all coaches reporting results) early indications are that the Northwest Juniors VBC teams did extremely well at the Regional Championships this year.

First weekend of Regionals (April 26-27) --

15 Thunder added another tournament championship to their resume in going undefeated and winning the U15 Gold Championship.  This completes a month where they went  20-1 overall (4-0 at Prime Time, 9-1 at the Lone Star Classic, and 7-0 at Regionals).  Also playing well was the 15 Heat team, who took third in the U15 D1 Silver Division (11th overall).  Northwest Juniors was one of just two clubs that had two teams in U15 D1 tournament and 3 teams in the U14 D1 tournament.  15 Tornado won the U15 D2 Silver Division.  Way to go 15 Tornado (see the picture).

Second weekend of Regionals (May 3 & 4) --

The 18 Storm team woke up and played extremely well at the U18 Regional Championships.  Coming in as the #13 overall seed, they took second in pool Saturday morning (taking over the #8 seed in Gold), then won a controversial match over the Narrows-PS 18 Black team (who was disqualified for using an illegal, unrostered player).  That got them a 9:00 AM Sunday match with WVBA 18 Black, which they lost, but in playing well and competing sparked them to play great volleyball the rest of the day.  The net result was a 5th place overall finish in the 18 Gold Division.

16 Storm won the U16 Division 1 Silver Division.  Losing only two matches all weekend (to UPVBC SWVBC Serendipity) -- the 16 Storm team dominated the Silver Division -- defeating Jammin' in the winner's Final and Cascade Blue in the Final.  A complete tournament synopsis can be found on the 16 Storm Team Page, here is the picture.

16 Ice took second in the U16 Division 2 Gold Division.  32 teams total in the Division 2 tournament and the 16 Ice team had a fantastic weekend in finishing second overall.
