Week #2,

February 3, 2008

Placed 18th out of 88

Ended up having a three team pool and went 1-1 with Redhots (beat them) and Wahine 16 Black.  The other pool had a three way tie for first with Island Thunder getting the tie breakers and being the number one seed.  If you haven't seen them yet, they are a TALL team.  We ended up losing the first game.  It was close though...I want to say 25-22.  We gave up two 4 or more point runs to them and told our team if they would just not give them runs we can take them easily.  Well...they listened.  We didn't give up more than two points in a row and took the second game easily 25-18.  Game three was neck and neck till about 8-8, then we switched sides and didn't look back.  They called a timeout at 14-9 after we had a 5 point run.  We missed a serve and we put them away on the very next play with a solid block.  Ended up losing to Wahine again in the final but, it didn't matter at that point.  They reached their goal of getting in to Silver!  Unfortunately, we didn't have stats taken for the whole day, however; Chrissy had at least 20 kills on the day and hit somewhere in the neighborhood of .350-.400.  We passed at 1.69 in the morning with Lauren passing at 2.0 on 42 attempts.  Why do they keep serving our Libero?    Emy had a team goal that said we need to start playing more like a team, and less like individuals.  I presented that to the team before we started playing and I think we realized that goal Sunday.

Next stop...Silver!  Hope to see Leon in the final so we can both go to Gold!

NW Juniors President's Day Tournament,  February 16-18, 2008 Tie for 3rd in Silver

Took the #1 seed, Salem 16 Black, to 25-21 in game two!  Excellent game!  They are #10 in Columbia Empire Power League and are the former #1.

Held seed to stay in division 1A by beating Reach VBC easily.

Shocked Webfoot 16 Silver in 3 after they beat us 25-9 in game one!  AWESOME!!!  My personal favorite!  They are #14 in Columbia Empire Power League.

We beat VIP Jrs. in game 1 and then crushed them in game 2.  The long rally in game two vs. VIP ended in a monster block by Mel.  That included digs by Mary, Lauren, Vic, Sam, Maggie and about 17 others.  The VIP Jrs. coach admitted that rally is what turned the tide in our direction.  The best the 16 Storm has played all year.  The team played their hearts out against Nike NW Air Max in the semi-finals...to no avail.  Kike NW Air Max ended up beating Edmonds Elite in the finals.  Great weekend overall.

PNQ Qualifier (Spokane)

Flight 1A (38th Overall out of 82 Teams)

Going into PNQ, 16 Storm had a favorable #2 seed in our pool.  After winning the first two matches in 3 set matches each, why have anything different for the final match vs. the #1 seed (#17 overall) NORCO 16 Blue out of Colorado?  After losing the first game 28-26, Storm came out with some fire and coasted to an easy game two victory 25-16.  Game three was the battle...I'm not sure how many lead changes and ties there were but, it had to be quite a few.  Tied at 12 however, we lost our might 'MO' and lost 12-15.  Our court was the second to last court completed on Friday night at around 9:45 pm.  During the last 2-3 hours of us playing and reffing, the snow began to fall...a good 4+ inches worth.  After taking about 15 minutes to collect our gear and get to the cars, we had a fun filled trip back to the hotel that took a good solid 45 minutes to an hour...a trip that took 15 minutes to make on the way in to town.

Well, of course not eating and being tired the girls needed to eat, shower and get to bed as early as possible.  Unfortunately for us, that didn't happen for most until at least midnight.  Did I mention yet that we had to play at 8 AM vs. the new #4 seed in the tournament?  Since the snow was falling we decided a 6:30 departure time would be plenty to get to EWU for our 8 AM match.  With little sleep and rest Storm gave up a large lead to start game 1 vs. NCVC.  After a bit of a wake up call, they battled their way to a loss, 20-25 and 18-25.  The other two matches of the day fared no better as Storm was just not firing on all cylinders.  The lack of sleep was just too much to overcome vs. some pretty good competition.  Storm had an 0'fer day on day two.

Day three had Storm in flight 1A playing a very good Hawaiian Style team that we had played at MLK 2 months prior.  Their lefty had just too much to give us and Storm went down 16-25, 17-25 to finish in 38th place overall.  The match had some amazing rallies, massive blocks and some really good defense on both sides of the net.

With UPVBC earning a bid in Club (taking second overall), and 2 other Puget sound teams placing ahead of us (Puget Sound 17th and Power Surge 34th), Storm finished 4th out of the teams from our region with several teams ahead of us in Power League finishing well below us.

16 Storm comes out of this weekend with a couple of things, a knowledge that they can play with any team, from anywhere...provided they have the opportunity to sleep.    Second, a new team motto..."Nothing was ever achieved with out ENTHUSIASM!" a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

16 Storm would also like to thank Becky Evans for joining us from 16 Inferno for the weekend.  We couldn't have done what we did without her.

U16 D1

PSR Regional Championships

Silver Champs (13th overall)

After a sobering opening match vs. UP and a disappointing match vs. a very good Saturday's Warriors team, 16 Storm found ways to win the rest of the weekend.  Storm's winning streak started with Jammin'.  A team that a few of my girls know well.  We lost to them once this year.  The girls weren't going to let that happen again.  After beating them easily Saturday, they were on the way to a Sunday filled with obstacles.

Sunday morning opened up with play vs. the second Saturday's Warriors team.  Another team with players that a few of our girls knew.  We started strong and built a decent lead in game one that didn't hold and let them win game one 26-24.  Too many service errors was too much to recover from.  Game two was a different story...domination.  25-12, they didn't see what hit them.  Game three was yet another battle.  With the score 11-13 for them, we went on a 3-0 run and forced them to call a timeout.  A blown call on game point and kill for them made it 14 all.  We sided out quickly on the ensuing serve and got a "make up" call to end the game 16-14.

The next match was a rematch.  Edmonds Intensity had beaten us earlier in the season.  Little did they know we were more than ready for them this day.  The match went 3 but, in the end Storm came out shining on top.  Not a thrilling match but, its always fun to beat an Edmonds VBC team.

Match #3, another rematch.  This time with Jammin'.  Same results as before.  Game one was close but, game two we came out strong and cruised to a 20-10 lead.  They found a way to rattle of some serves and cut the lead down but, it was much too late.  Our middles were dominating their star middle all match long.  She'd hit, we'd block.  She'd tip, we'd dig it.  We took their star out of play and had a blast doing it.  Game two ended 25-19 and storm was in the final!

After a 2 hour wait while the losers bracket flushed itself out, we got to play Cascade Blue.  A team we share a great system with.  Cascade was not ready for the pounding they took in the final.  They had to run through the losers bracket forcing them to play 5 matches to our 3.  They were tired after pummeling Jammin' in the losers' final.  Storm was awake, well fed and ready for battle.  From the starting whistle, the match went in our direction.  Both games were well played and Storm came out on top in both.

Congratulations to D1 Silver Champions NW Juniors 16 Storm!!!  Great job ladies!
