17 Thunder 2008 Coaches Corner
| Tournament | Win/Loss Record | Coaches Notes |
| Las Vegas Invitational |
In our first venture into the elite realm
of national qualifying tournaments 17 Thunder showed grit and promise of
the team we could become. In our first day we ran across a very good
Team Tulsa, and Vision-17's. For most of us this was our first time at
a major tournament of this nature and our nerves showed. After losing
the first 2 matches we finally became comfortable on the court and
played some great volleyball. Beating Highland in a 16-14 nail biter.
Throughout the day our game improved, and our momentum continued to day
2. Sunday proved to be quite a contest. Our first match against Pacific Performance was a roll reversal for us. We came awake and prepared. They weren't. 17 Aces recorded in the match made for a good serving warm up for our next far more difficult opponents. Hawaiian Islands, and Club Jamba are 2 very disciplined and veteran teams. Despite handing us 2 more losses, 17 Thunder played the best volleyball we have shown all year. Passing for both matches averaged near 2.0 (out of 3.0), with a solid average of 2.3 (12 attempts) given by Savanna Aguilar to lead all passers. Natalie Michajla had the kill of the tournament for us on an overfeed, and overall as a team we played better than ever. Despite the losses coaches and parents were proud of the team effort. Day 3 began the tournament for us matching against a solid, but beatable Zia Havok team. After taking the first game Zia found their serve, and closed out the tournament for us. Ashley Snedeker with a never say die attitude pounded the Zia blockers for 13 kills. As a coach the highlights of the tournament centered both on and off the court. Our team bonded well in our off time, which showed during games. The chaperone and parents did a fantastic job of keeping us well fed, in line, and ready to play. I was incredibly proud of how we responded to outside distractions, focused on playing hard volleyball, and had a great time wherever we went. Overall this team showed a level they have never shown before, and have set the bar high for themselves this next tournament. |
