It was an interesting weekend for the Vortex. After only one practices as a team before the first tournament, the team was faced with the challenge remembering each other's names as well as meshing to play the sport together!
Saturday was frustrating, in that the team would come so close to victory all day, but simply could not finish. Close games with the score only differing in a few points against KJ 17's, UPVBC, and Narrows in the first pool and the same pattern in the second pool with Edmonds and Rain City. Day one set us up for an early morning at Kentwood for day two.
Sunday was a different story. Some of the chaos had died down, and the team started playing as a team. Great serving came from Raj Dhaliwal, Tonya Pyatohka, Erika Warren, Chelsea Thompson, and Christi Blanton. Kills from our outsides Christi and Tonya, great digging by libero Erika, and the hustle of setter Melissa Arias led the team to a victorious - yet LONG - Sunday. After beating Grays Harbor and OPVBC, we had a tough match up against SIVA, ending up victorious in a passionate 3 games. We ended up losing the championship game - after a long 2 hour break - to Lake Tapps. A game that the entire team knows that we could win. We are looking forward to the MLK weekend. |

We had a very productive
day on Sunday. Our hard work earned us a championship berth vs. Lake
Tapps. They have proved to be our toughest rival thus far. Though we took 2nd overall, we still earned a promotion to the next flight. The girls did a great job. We had some powerful digs by our outside hitter, Tonya and Libero, Erika. In addition to playing AWESOME defense, Erika only missed one serve. We had some big hits from both our middles, Alena & Raj. They were helped out by Christy (OH), Tonya (OH), Mckenna (RS), Chelsea (RS) and Desi who also played both RS and OH. Parm was essential in our matches, she did well covering various positions both in the front and back row. We also had help from our DS, Navi who played hard and gave 100% Our setter Melissa also did a fantastic job. She was consistent and moved quickly around the court resulting in some incredible assists. We used our middles quite a bit and back row attacks to come out on top. Overall, the girls did a great job and have made huge improvements. We are all looking forward to playing this weekend. |

PNQ Spokane |
We had a great time in
Spokane this past weekend. We started the weekend with a fight. We
received our first "W" on Saturday and continued fighting until our last
match on Sunday. On Saturday, we had 2 w's and 1 loss. This was to
one of our toughest rivals, Lake Tapps. After taking 2nd in our pool, we
went back to our hotel feeling great. We started Sunday with a energized win to Space Needle~Obama. We won in 3 thanks to everyone playing hard and not giving up. We were scheduled for a 2nd match vs. Pinnacle and won due to forfeit. This put us in position to play for 1st place in flight 2. We showed up ready to fight and took 2nd in flight 2. Everyone did a great job. One of our strongest players this weekend was Tanya with several kills, aces and great passes. We had a strong turnout from our Libero, Erika. She has some significant digs and several great passes. Melissa was a setting machine and used the entire court to take advantage of our front and back row attacks. We had strength on our right side that proved to be very helpful. Both Chelsea and Mckenna produced some kills and powerful hits to shake up the opponents defense. In the middle we had help from Alena and Raj. They took advantage of holes on the opposite side to help us gain points. In addition to Tanya, we had some powerful hits from Christy and Jasmine. They did a great job helping out our team. Melissa also has some incredible passes from our back row. In addition to our consistent and powerful libero, we had passing assistance from our DS, Navi, Parm and Chelsea. Parm assisted us not only in the back row, but did a great job helping out as an outside. We had Desi playing both outside and middle which helped us "shake" things up. Desi helped us in the front row in addition to serving up some crucial points. Other serving aces this weekend included Chelsea, Navi, Tanya, Raj, Jasmine, Melissa and Mckenna. Overall, out team deserves a huge pat on the back . They worked so hard and came out on top of their flight. We left Spokane feeling energized, excited and ready for power league this coming weekend. We are confident we will do well and move up again. Great job 18 Vortex!!! |
