Northwest Juniors Volleyball Club Summer Series

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION: June 5th, 2011

2011 JUNIOR BEACH SERIES

EVENT #1

TEAMS | RECAP | RESULTS | 2010 RESULTS

We have had some great summers and we are looking forward to some great participation numbers and superior competition in 2011.   Our participation numbers grow each summer as players (and their parents) are realizing the benefits of playing beach volleyball throughout the summer.  Players, especially are finding out how fun the beach culture is -- spending a hot sunny day on the beach, without their coach!  Tournaments have been filling early as there is limited space on the beach and even our fours series events have been filling up.  In order to maximize the space on the beach we have combined doubles and fours on some weekends.  This allows players to play doubles on one day and fours on the other.  It also give the U14's -- usually our largest division -- the opportunity to play doubles twice in the same weekend if they choose to play up to the U16's on the second day.  This summer we expect many of the same faces and some new ones to come and crown the NW JUNIOR BEACH DOUBLES CHAMPIONS.

Looking to get matching beach uniforms for you and your partner (or teammates)?  Check out our new beach sponsor: Smack Sportswear.  They make some great packages to help you get outfitted and be styling on the beach.

We expect to have a good selection of Sand Socks.  We will also have on-hand the Spalding King of the Beach volleyball for $45.00 -- the KOB is the official volleyball of  the USA Jr. Beach Volleyball Series -- check with the tournament director if you are interested.  Players are offered the opportunity to pre-purchase the KOB Volleyball for a $10 discount as part of their registration.  Also, remember to patronize Christo's on Alki, our official restaurant down there on the beach -- they give a 20% discount to participants and their families.

Here is a list of the teams, if your team is not listed, we did not receive your entry.  We highly encourage pre-registration.  If you do not make it in this time, we encourage you to register now for our June 11th or 12's tournament.  Please note, that there will be more space in future tournaments since age groups are divided in doubles: U12 & U14 on Saturday, U16, U18, U20 on Sunday.  Great opportunity to play doubles on one day and fours on the other!

EVENT RECAP

A record 85 teams registered and participated in our opening event of the 2011 NW Volleyball Junior Beach Series and they were treated to a great weekend of volleyball.  Unfortunately because of limited space at Alki Beach (we reached capacity at 15 nets!) a few teams were turned away, but those that did register early enough were able to participate in a truly amazing event.  It was quite the site -- 15 nets from one end of Alki Beach to the other -- all full of great junior doubles play.   It was a great site -- like an outdoor campout -- as our junior parents and players took over Alki Beach with canopies, barbecuing, and a party-like atmosphere along Alki Avenue.

Many familiar faces were seen on our opening weekend and it was great for our staff to be able to see old friends in such a casual atmosphere.  It was also nice to welcome all the new faces that we hope to see throughout the summer and for years to come.  Players came from all over the Puget Sound Region and as far away as Yakima to spend a day at the beach playing volleyball.  The U12, U14, and U16's Divisions were so packed with players that we had to divide them into two divisions after pool play, and all divisions were awarded prizes -- donated from our wonderful sponsors: Smack Sportswear/VB Superstore, Seattle Beach Volleyball Club, Coastal Surf Boutique, and Jamba Juice.

Champions of the U18 Division were Taylor Brooks and Haley Bedell, from NW Juniors Elite VBC.  They have been playing together off and on for 4 years, and their ball control and savvy showed in the finals (since both are about 5' 6") as the two beat Taina Kanar and Haley McDonald of 253 Elite.  Tiva Akau & Olivia VanDlac (NW Juniors Elite) and Marina Stoermer (Cascade 18's)  & Katie Johnston (All Out VBC) tied for 3rd place.

In the U16's Championship Division -- our largest division with 25 teams -- it was veterans Taylor Buell and Lexi White (253 Elite) over twins Katrina & Kristen Lane (ITVC) in a very competitive final; while Karle Pittsinger & Cassidy Brewer (Team Yakima Gold) and Riley Fawcett and Olivial Lanier (PSVBA) Tied for third.  In the consolation division Alexia Elliott-Free & Megan Smith from Pacific Coast VBA) defeated Tazmin Stone & Kylee Shaffer of 253 Elite.

In the very competitive U14's Championship Division Abbi Bailey and Kyla Ogburn, who both play for 253 Elite defeated up and comers Samantha Dreschsel & Alexyss Nelson from WVBA. In a tie for third, it was Alleah Beres/Jasmine Moore from KJVBC and Camryn Buell/Kaycee Shaffer from 253 Elite.  In the consolation bracket it was Katrice Pond & Fiona Tanuwidjaja (KJVBC) over Raven Olin & Natalia Medrano (Puyallup Juniors).

In what looks like the beginnings of an interesting battle all summer long featuring players from Puget Sound VBA and NW Juniors 12 Eclipse, the U12's division was littered with players from both teams.  The finals featured players that got their feet wet playing 12's last and who are becoming fast friends and rivals.  In the end Hannah Pukis & Claire McCarthy from PSVBA defeated NW Juniors' Skyler D'Urso and Lara Mangulabnan in a spirited final and provided some great entertainment.  Third place finishers were Kelly McGinnis & Mina Duong from WVBA and Sophia Suarez & Britnie Casillas from Power Surge.  In the consolation final it was Clarice Buchanan & Leea Jones of PSVBA defeating first timers Calli Loan of NW Juniors and Kaelin Sheuerman from WVBA.

The U12 and U14's divisions are full of potential and there are a lot of enthusiastic athletes competing.  Seeing these young players play so early in their volleyball careers makes one look forward to watching them play all summer as well as for the next several years.  Congratulations to all participants on a great weekend of beach volleyball.
