15 Thunder Earns Bid To Nationals!

Perfection... That is one word that can be used to describe the 15 Thunder's play on Sunday, April 6th as they swept through undefeated at the U15 PRIME TIME tournament at Bellevue Community College.  15 Thunder did not drop a single set throughout the day, and put an exclamation point on their day with a 25-16, 25-15 victory over WVBA 15 Black in the Final.

The format called for double elimination play as the region's top 8 U15 teams assembled for the right to go to Dallas with the Region's National Division bid.  They entered the day as the #4 seed (based on Power League play) and started with a convincing win over #5 Lake Tapps 15's (25-14, 25-14), then immediately had to play the #1 seed WVBA.  After some initial nerves, they emerged with a 28-26, 25-20 win over WVBA, earning themselves a two-round break and a match-up with #3 Capitol Ice in the winner's Final.  A close first set (25-21) led to 15 Thunder  putting it in overdrive and cruising to a second set win (25-16) and a date with destiny.  As the consolation bracket sorted itself out  -- WVBA defeated #2 Puget Sound and Capitol Ice for a second shot at 15 Thunder -- the 15 Thunder team stayed relaxed and kept their spirits up.  WVBA was on a roll, and Thunder was ready.

The final was a work of art.  Both sets went virtually the same way -- both teams traded big blocks, big digs, and big swings as the first half of the set was neck and neck until around 12 points -- then 15 Thunder got into a rhythm and put the set away.  The highlight of the stretch run in set number 2 was Sarah Hanna pounding a ball at the 6 foot line down the line, around the WVBA blocker.  That swing punctuated a long run for 15 Thunder and took the wind out of the WVBA team's sails.  There were many heroes on the Thunder team --and everyone did something to contribute to the team's winning a bid.  It was truly an exciting day of volleyball.  We are all proud of you 15 Thunder!

Northwest Juniors Teams Excel at Regional Championships:

With some of the results still not posted to the regional website (and not all coaches reporting results) early indications are that the Northwest Juniors VBC teams did extremely well at the Regional Championships this year.

First weekend of Regionals (April 26-27) --

15 Thunder added another tournament championship to their resume in going undefeated and winning the U15 Gold Championship.  This completes a month where they went  20-1 overall (4-0 at Prime Time, 9-1 at the Lone Star Classic, and 7-0 at Regionals).  Also playing well was the 15 Heat team, who took third in the U15 D1 Silver Division (11th overall).  Northwest Juniors was one of just two clubs that had two teams in U15 D1 tournament and 3 teams in the U14 D1 tournament.  15 Tornado won the U15 D2 Silver Division.  Way to go 15 Tornado (see the picture).

Second weekend of Regionals (May 3 & 4) --

The 18 Storm team woke up and played extremely well at the U18 Regional Championships.  Coming in as the #13 overall seed, they took second in pool Saturday morning (taking over the #8 seed in Gold), then won a controversial match over the Narrows-PS 18 Black team (who was disqualified for using an illegal, unrostered player).  That got them a 9:00 AM Sunday match with WVBA 18 Black, which they lost, but in playing well and competing sparked them to play great volleyball the rest of the day.  The net result was a 5th place overall finish in the 18 Gold Division.

16 Storm won the U16 Division 1 Silver Division.  Losing only two matches all weekend (to UPVBC SWVBC Serendipity) -- the 16 Storm team dominated the Silver Division -- defeating Jammin' in the winner's Final and Cascade Blue in the Final.  A complete tournament synopsis can be found on the 16 Storm Team Page, here is the picture.

16 Ice took second in the U16 Division 2 Gold Division.  32 teams total in the Division 2 tournament and the 16 Ice team had a fantastic weekend in finishing second overall.  More details are coming...

2008 End of Year BBQ date set!  Please join us as we wrap up the 2008 club season at Crossroads Park on June 22nd from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  There will be food & drink provided, and all teams will have the opportunity to present awards and talk about their season.  Club director awards will also be given out at all age groups.  Looking forward to seeing you there!  We need Focals to check with their teams and RSVP to us a head count of how many will attend from their team (so we buy enough food!).

2008 NW Volleyball Camp dates are final!  We are now accepting registrations for all camps.  See CAMPS Page for more details.  Note, all NW Juniors Volleyball Club members receive a discount to attend.

Congratulations to our April Team of the Month, 15 Thunder!  The Team team went 20-1 in April in winning Prime Time (and qualifying for Nationals), winning the Silver Division at Lone Star Classic, and topping it off with a Championship  at the U15 Regional tournament.
Congratulations to our April Coach of the Month, Leon Blazer!  Leon was the mastermind behind the great month that the 15 Thunder team enjoyed.  His patience and hard work, along with his guidance of a great coaching staff, allowed the team to enjoy great success in April.
Congratulations to our March Team of the Month, 15 Heat!  The Heat team made great strides in March and their month was highlighted by a 6-3 weekend at the PNQ and a victory in Flight 3.  Click here to view their team page, and Coach Tony Miranda's thoughts on the team.  Great work 15 Heat!
Congratulations to our March Coach of the Month, Kim Werkau!  Kim's commitment to the club showed when she took the over coaching duties for the 13 Twister team in Spokane and led them to a good experience.  Her month was also highlighted with great showings by the 18 Storm team in Yakima, Spokane and Power League.  For the record, that made three weekends in a row for Kim out of town traveling with teams.  Thank-you for your dedication, Kim!
Congratulations to our February Team of the Month, 13 Thunder!  The Thunder progressed leaps & bounds in the month of February.  Click here to view their team page, and Coach Mati's thoughts on the team.  Great work 13 Thunder!
Congratulations to our February Coach of the Month, Amanda Crank!  Amanda's dedication & work with the 15 Thunder continues to help push the team to the next level.  In addition, Crank has great dedication in helping other teams included 18 Storm & 14 Cyclone.  Great work Amanda!

Congratulations to our January Team of the Month, 15 Thunder!  The Thunder finished 7th in the U16 January Power league in the Gold Division.  They also were the Tournament Champions in our Club tourney on Jan 5th and finished 9 and 6 in the highly competitive Martin Luther King Invitational.  Great work 15 Thunder!

Congratulations to our January Coach of the Month, Raven Northrup.  Raven coaches the 17 Vortex who won the Navy Division of the U18 January Power League. Raven has also put a lot of time in working and helping several other teams in the club.  She has been a constant supporter traveling to watch other NW Juniors teams at their tournaments.  Thank you to Raven and all of our coaches for a great month!

PNQ Highlights -- Week 1

(as submitted by coaches, and posted on individual team pages):

15 Thunder:

Playing in the 15 Open, our 15 Thunder team tied for 7th place overall.  With that finish they were the highest finishing Puget Sound Region team in the Qualifier (along with WVBA). They played their way into contention on the first day, finding themselves among the tall California trees on Day 2.  Day 2 was a disappointing day results-wise (losing to two Qualifiers: Champions Long Beach, and 3rd Place Golden Bear); however they learned some lessons and can see that in many areas they are close to these top teams that will play in the Open at Junior Nationals.   Despite losing some tough matches to some very good out of region teams, they gained confidence and experience leading into their next opportunity to qualify for Nationals.  Their next opportunity will be Sunday, April 6th in the PSR Prime Time tournament, which will be held at Bellevue CC.  We invite all NW Juniors players, coaches, and parents that can make it to come and cheer them on (before or after practice?).

15 Heat:

15 Heat had a good weekend in the 15 Club Division -- finishing with a 6-3 record and a Flight 3 Championship.   After a tough first day (1-2 record, 3rd place) they bounced back on Saturday finishing 2-1 with big wins over RipCurls (Southern Cal) and Defiance (Colorado) - earning a first place tie in pool.  Tiebreakers dropped them to third in pool and Flight 3, where they would make the best of the situation.  A bright and early 8 AM match against vaunted VIP 15's from Spokane, had the Heat team take game 1, lose game 2, and win a thrilling game 3 to move to the next round -- against Pinnacle 15-1 (NorCal).  Same pattern, win game one, lose game two -- the 15 Heat team really got some chances to play tight matches and grow up -- another game 3 win, this time 18-16 (what a great match).  Ironically, the Heat team did not play a single Puget Sound Region team until the final, defeating Edmonds 15's handily in 2 games. An anti-climactic victory after two exciting 3-set matches earlier in the day -- but a very welcome win over our neighbors in Edmonds!  We voted Sammie Minnig as our Tournament MVP, but had great performances from a lot of players.

14 Storm:

14 Storm lost in the Flight 2 finals, defeating two Northern California teams (Golden Bear 14 Gold & Hang Ten Blue) before losing to Altamont 14 Navy (also NorCal).  They had a good weekend with wins over locals Edmonds and Space Needle; as well as the two California teams and a team from Austin Jrs (TX).  From coach Deana Thompson:  "In the Pacific Northwest Qualifier, we went 5 - 4 overall. The first day, our record was 1 – 2, the second day, 2 – 1, and the third, 2 – 1. Of the nine matches, we didn’t play up to our potential in two; however, as an overall tournament, the girls played well. Leading us in serve receive was Luisa Chew, passing a 1.9. Also leading us in hitting was Chew, hitting a .360. Jordan Gates serving 20 percent aces, 91 percent in, with 79 attempts, did a great job keeping our opponents out of system. Our defense was amazing; Colleen Pinkleman and Claire Holcombe led us in digs, with Jenna Pang leading out team in blocks. Kellie Hartford also did a great job stepping into an unfamiliar position, and she played extremely hard.  -- Good Job!"
